Web Pages and Searches

What is a Home Page?

A home page is the web page that comes up first when you log on to the internet from your PC. After logging on to the internet, the first screen you see will be someone's home page. It will probably be the home page of your ISP. That's because they have advertising on it they want you to see every time you get on the internet.

You can either continue to use the home page provided by your ISP, or choose your own after you gain some internet experience. Functionally, as far as using the internet is concerned, it makes no difference what home page you use. From the home page, you can go to any other web page, providing you have its address.

With a web page address, in mind, on a piece of paper or whatever, you can type it into the Address bar portion of your browser. Then hit the enter key on your keyboard. In a few seconds you will see the web page located at the address you typed into the address bar. For example you could see the Microsoft Network home page by typing www.msn.com into the Address bar.

The Address Bar

The address bar is usually located on the bottom of your browser frame. Notice I said browser frame not web page. The address bar is preceeded by the label Address and followed by a slot where you can type in the address of any web page you want to see. The address bar on the Internet Explorer browser frame looks like the following:

Notice the Search the Web search bar indicated in the above picture. It is located on the web page, not the browser. That is where you enter search words, called keywords in internet talk.
