Selecting with the mouse

It is possible to select (i.e., highlight) material with the mouse instead of the keyboard. However it is more difficult for people who are not all that steady with mouse movements. I explain it so you can try it and decide for yourself which method you prefer.

To select material with the mouse, do the following:

1. Place the mouse pointer over the beginning of the material you want to select

2. Then press and hold down the left mouse button

3. Move the mouse to the end of the material you want to select

4. Release the left mouse button

Performing the above procedure is also called "dragging" the mouse. If you click on an object like a picture for instance, you can drag the object to a new location. Moving objects is something that is done frequently when using a drawing or greeting card program.

Getting to the drop down menus via the keyboard

I'm going to show you the following procedures for using the keyboard when the mouse is not working. Believe me, the

mouse can become "dead" on rare occasions. When this happens, you need to be able to shutdown programs that are running and then shutdown the computer from the main Start button.

Getting Program Drop Down Menus From Keyboard (Does not work on Windows ME)

To get to the drop down menus from the keyboard, you first tap the "Alt" key (either one of them) and the "File" menu will highlight or a box will form around it. Try it on your Tilly letter. After the menu item "File" highlights, tap the "down arrow" key and the menu will drop down. Tap the "down arrow" again and the first item on the list "New" will highlight. If you continue to tap the "down arrow" the remaining items in the list highlight. As each item highlights, it can be selected (activated) by tapping the "Enter" key.

Exiting a Program From the Keyboard

Tap the "Alt" key, then tap the down arrow key until you get the item "Exit" highlighted. Then tap the "Enter" key and you will close the letter to aunt Tilly.

Another way to shut down any windows program (including Windows ME) via the keyboard is to hold down the Alt key, the tap the F4 key.
