Copy, Cut and Paste (3)

Now left click the word Paste and the two lines are pasted to the end of the first paragraph right after "15th". So now you know how to "Copy" and "Paste" in any windows program. Again I remind you that you are learning skills that apply to all windows programs.

Now I'll show you how to do "copying and pasting" using keys on your keyboard instead of the drop down menus.

If you take a close look at the two previous pictures, you'll notice that right after the word "Copy" you see "Ctrl + C" and right after "Paste" you see "Ctrl + V" and right after "Cut" you see Ctrl+X These are the keystrokes that accomplish the same thing as using the drop down menu. Here's how they work.

Using Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to copy and paste

After you "select" the text you want to copy, you simply hold down the "Ctrl" key and tap the "C" key on your keyboard, then let go of the "Ctrl" key. After doing that, the highlighted text is automatically placed in the clipboard just as it would be if you had gone to the "Edit" menu and clicked on "Copy". Try it.

After copying something to the clipboard,

you can "Paste" what's in the clipboard into your letter wherever you place the typing cursor (not the mouse pointer, the typing cursor). Move the mouse pointer to the place where you want the typing cursor and left click once - that will bring the typing cursor to that spot. Once the typing cursor is where you want it, hold down the "Ctrl" key and tap the "V" key, then let go of the "Ctrl" key. The text is pasted right where you want it. If you want a space to separate the text, place the typing cursor where you want the space and tap the space bar. A space will be inserted.

Cutting

To cut material you first select what you want to cut. Then hold down the Ctrl key and while hoplding it down, tap the "X" key. The highlighted material will be removed from where it is presently and be placed in the clipboard. After the material is in the clipboard, it can be pasted to a new location in your document.

So, the difference between copy and cut is that copying leaves the highlighted material where it is and gives you the opportunity to copy it somewhere else. Cutting removes the material from where it is and, like copy, gives you the opportunity to paste it somewhere else.
