PC Equipment (3)

The Arrow keys move the typing cursor up, down, and sideways as indicated by the direction the arrow is pointing. Remember these keys are repeater keys. Holding them down causes the cursor to move continuously until you release the key.

The final section is the number pad on the extreme right of the keyboard.

The keys are laid out like an adding machine. Their only purpose is to serve the needs of people who prefer the adding machine layout. Everything on the number pad can be done elsewhere on the main keyboard.

The Tower

The tower contains the electronic "guts" of the PC. The guts can include the fixed disk drive, the floppy disk drive, the modem, and more.

The Modem:

The modem is an electronic card located inside your tower or PC desk case that you plug your

phone line into in order to get on the internet or use your PC to send faxes or make and receive phone calls.

Surge Protector

This device protects your delicate PC and its peripherals from lightning and other electrical shocking. All your equipment should be plugged into the surge protector unless the instructions tell you otherwise

The disks (called media): Disks for the PC come in two flavors: 3.5" floppy disks and CD disks (about 4").

The floppy disk below is on the left. A compact disk ( CD) is on the right.

You will use 3.5" disks to save files or to retrieve files. You will use compact disks (CDs) to retrieve information that's written on them and to install software on your PC. Most software programs come to you in a box of CDs. So you will remove the CDs from the box and use them to install the software.
