All Windows operating systems (95,98,ME and later) provide you with a folder called My Documents on the C: drive of your PC. In this folder you should store your letters, reminder notes, spread sheets, pictures, drawings etc. that you create as time goes on.
Within the My Documents folder you can create subfolders with various topics that specifically relate to your documents. So, let's create a folder inside the My Documents Folder as an example of what you can do. Since the My Documents folder is on the C: drive, we need to go to the C: drive and display its folders/files. Do the following procedure:
1. Double click the My Computer icon (on the desktop)
Somewhere in the list of folders you'll see My Documents. It is usually in the first five or ten. If you don't see it scroll (using the scroll bar on the right side of the window) down or sideways until you do. When you see it, double click it. At this point you probably will see no subfolders or files because you haven't put anything in there. However, if you have been creating files and didn't understand anything about saving or organizing files, you may see a whole bunch of your files in there that you didn't know what happened to. |
This is a good time to clean house. Any file that is in there that you no longer want and wish to delete can simply be highlighted (clicked once) and deleted by then hitting the delete key on your keyboard. When you're through house cleaning, we can create the subfolder we want. For example let's create a subfolder called Saved Letters. Go to the File menu at the top of the My Documents window you are looking at, click once, then move the mouse cursor to New, then over to Folder and click once. You'll see a new folder, already highlighted with the title New Folder. Since the slot is already highlighted, you simply type the name you want for this new folder and what's already in the slot will be replaced automatically. Type Saved Letters. Then hit the enter key to complete the process. Last, pat yourself on the back. You can repeat the procedure to create as many folders as you wish. In the future when you create files, you can save them into the proper subfolder of the My Documents folder - just like a real pro!!! |
