Search/Find Files

Here's the procedure for finding files:
1. Single click the Start button on the desktop.
2. Then move your mouse cursor up to Find.
3. Then move the cursor over to Files or
Folders and click once.

You'll see something like the following, depending on how your computer is configured:

There are three slots on this dialog box. One is labeled Named:, the second is labeled Containing text: and a third is labeled Look in:.

The "Named:" list box is where you type in the name of the file you are searching for. As an example let's search for a file we think is named "scandisk.log". You probably have such a file somewhere on your PC.

Type scandisk.log in the white area of the slot labeled Named:

Make certain the Look in: box reads My Computer because that tells the computer to search all drives on your PC. If yours doesn't read "My Computer" click the tiny arrowhead at the right end to drop down a list of options and click on "My Computer".

Finally click the Find Now button.

In a second or two the file Scandisk.log will appear in a separate dialog box. Notice that the first column to the right of the file Scandisk.log is the path for this file. Every time the computer finds a file it will show you its path. Since we know the path, the path tells us that this file is not in any folder and is randomly placed on the C: drive.

To illustrate how to use the Containing text box, click the New Search button, then click OK on the question being asked to start a new search. Skip the Named: box and click anywhere in the white area of the Containing text: slot to place your text cursor there. Then type the words Microsoft ScanDisk for Windows in the slot.
